Verchères

Thomas Verchères de Boucherville was born in Quebec. He became a fur trader in 1803 when he was 18 years old. He worked in York for a merchant then moved to Amherstburg in 1805. He set up a store there to trade with the Native people.
In 1812 he joined the local militia and took part in the capture of Detroit. He was also part of Procter's retreat up the Thames River.
He wrote a book in 1847 about his experiences in the war. His recollection of dates is poor, and some events appear unlikely, but he was an excellent storyteller.
