Lydia Bacon was born in Boston in 1786. She was the daughter of Mary and Levi Stetson. Sometime before 1811, she married Josiah Bacon, a lieutenant and quartermaster in the 4th U.S. Regiment of Infantry. Lydia followed her husband throughout his career. In May of 1812, the 4th U.S. was ordered to join
General Hull's North West Army. This soon brought the couple to Detroit. Lydia would remain optimistic despite the threat of war. She carried two books as companions during her travels - the Bible and Homer's Iliad. She kept a diary in which she wrote about the events that happened in Detroit during 1812.
Lydia Bacon died in 1853.
