In 1910 Henry Ford approached Detroiter John Kelsey and asked him to manufacture the wooden automotive wheel which at the time was considered state-of-the-art. Kelsey sold his initial product to Ford, Chalmers, Saxon and Hupmobile, and during the first World War, he made wheels for military wagons and gun carriages. Kelsey Wheel Co. in Windsor began operations in November, 1913, where it continued turning out auto bodies and wheels for automobile manufacturers. By 1919 it had doubled in size. Eventually it moved away from the wooden wheel and started manufacturing the wire spoke wheel and eventually the steel wheel that is used today. Kelsey-Hayes Canada Ltd., is still a major employer in the City of Windsor, having become a leader in developing state-of-the-art anti-lock brake systems. |
