Tips and strategies are provided which can be of use for patients in the home and in traveling situations. Also, there is an article by Dr. Thomas L. Petty offering the latest news in the field of COPD research. A section is provided in which readers can publish personal experiences with COPD. While this site lacks in medical information, it is an excellent source of support and information on making life with COPD more comfortable.

Alliance for Lung Cancer Home Page
The Alliance for Lung Cancer provides advocacy, support, and education on lung cancer. Education material provided is a large volume of information on lung cancer for finding the best care, from introductory information on cancer to a detailed 200-page PDF document. Support includes stories of personal experiences from cancer survivors, a list of support groups, a “Phone Buddies” program organized by the staff of ALCASE, and a toll-free support hotline. Advocacy includes information on activism to change the course of lung cancer, including cancer awareness, and tobacco activism. ALCASE is an excellent site for educational, support, and advocating information.

American Lung Association
This is a resourceful site which offers useful information on emphysema, chronic bronchitis, prevention/treatment of influenza and the common cold, HIV/AIDS and lung disease, lung cancer, pneumonia, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, asthma and much more. The information covers general information such as symptoms, who gets the disease, how it develops and what treatments are available. This site also offers statistics and data on lung disorders such as COPD based on American values. The site offers a search engine and icons for searching the medical archives.

American Lung Association Fact Sheet: COPD
The fact sheet is a collection of statistic relating to COPD. Information provided includes reported cases, causes of COPD, treatment information, and symptoms. This site is scarce in its volume of and depth of information, but is an adequate site for statistical references.

This site provides a large number of credible links to information on cystic fibrosis. It is an excellent center for directions to resources on CF, both general and specific.

Asthma in Canada: A Landmark Survey
Asthma in Canada is the product of a large “Landmark Survey” across Canada of “1,001 adults with asthma or parents of children with asthma, as well as a national sample of 266 physicians.” It focuses on the quality of life associated with asthma, quality and severity of symptoms, management techniques, and the effect of increasing numbers of asthma cases on the Canadian Health system. National and regional statistics are shown from the survey and references are provided for local asthma support groups. Several Adobe Acrobat documents are provided which include full statistics and management recommendations regarding asthma.

Asthma Resource Page
The Asthma Resource Page is hosted by the Lung Association of Canada, a non-profit organization that is mother to ten provincial divisions. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing about awareness of lung disorders and offering community services to those who suffer from lung disorders. The Asthma Resource Page offers a vast amount of information about asthma, asthma management, nutrition, exercises, allergies, pregnancy, and asthma medications. In the future, the Lung Association plans to host an online support group for sufferers of asthma and other lung disorders.

Asthma Society of Canada
The Asthma Society of Canada web site is a part of the Asthma Society’s mission to improve the quality of life of sufferers of asthma by providing information and education about the disease. The Asthma Society also provides funding for asthma research through private donations and fundraisers. The site provides information about asthma including the basics of its causes and symptoms, advice on diagnosis, and an in-depth discussion on preventing and managing the effects of asthma. The Society publishes a number of brochures on asthma, which are available as Adobe Acrobat files. There is also a section specific to juvenile asthma sufferers and their parents.

Provided in the “Pneumonia and Pleurisy” chapter is a large volume of in-depth information on pneumonia and (to a lesser extent) pleurisy. Information included in the chapter are a description of pneumonia (including symptoms and treatment), contagious causes of pneumonia, diagnosis procedures, diagrams of the lungs and how they are affected by pneumonia, pneumonia vaccine information, a discussion of Legionnaire’s Disease and its relation to pneumonia, and prognosis.

Breathe Easy – Common Cold
Breathe Easy is an online book written by Dr. Lawrence Martin, M.D. The chapter devoted to viral infections of the upper respiratory system includes an amount of information on the common cold. A general overview of the cold is presented, as well as treatment information, its symptoms, its effect on society, and its relation to the flu. Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Canadian Site)
The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an organization that strives to increase research and therapy in the field of cystic fibrosis to improve the quality of life of those affected by cystic fibrosis. CFRI: Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc.
Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 1975. CFRI funds research in the field of cystic fibrosis through donations and provides a number of educational programs. This includes the CFRI newsletter, brochures, and meetings and talks on CF research and daily living. They also fund an annual educational conference, and a summer retreat for children with CF. Included on the web site is some basic information on CF, back issues of the CFRI newsletter, the latest news in research and management, and a listing of conferences and fundraisers.

Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario: BPD
This site is hosted by the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, a pediatric hospital operated from the University of Ottawa. CLD Information Resource

Our resource is oriented toward the interest and technical sophistication of the general public.” This site is maintained by the Cheshire Medical Center. Some of the information found on this site includes: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (i.e. emphysema, chronic bronchitis, alpha 1- antitrypsin deficiency), asthma information (disease information, control etc), interstitial lung disease (sarcoidosis, asbestosis, Wegener’s granulomatosis, fibrosis etc.), lung transplant information, pulmonary rehabilitation, respiratory medications (such as albuterol, salmeterol, etc.), cystic fibrosis and much more.

Common Cold
The Lung Association of Canada provides this site. Information offered is very straightforward and mostly includes different myths associated with the common cold, as well as general information about the causes of the common cold and how it is spread. A user with a strong base of knowledge about the common cold would likely not find much of use here, but it is definitely a good starting point for building a base of knowledge, and for general information.

Croup Syndromes

Cystic Fibrosis Resources for Daily Living and Information
CysticFibrosis.com offers a large volume of information regarding cystic fibrosis. Information provided includes recent news from the medical community, CF center information, clinical trials, gene therapy, a number of external links, a listing of international (including Canadian) CF associations, current events in CF research and treatment, a listing of available newsletters from various organizations, and a listing of books relevant to CF. An excellent source of information in many aspects of Cystic Fibrosis study.

Cystic-L: Cystic Fibrosis Info and Support
“CYSTIC-L is a free email service dedicated to the exchange of information and support specific to cystic fibrosis.” Established in 1994, it is an e-mail discussion board consisting of over 500 members with an interest in cystic fibrosis. Also provided on Cystic-L is a web-based forum similar to the email service, archives of the discussion board, photos of some members of Cystic-L, recent news in research, external links, and a comprehensive handbook about cystic fibrosis, treatments, coping, diagnosis information, and large volume of articles on day-to-day living with cystic fibrosis. An excellent source for medical and personal information as well as support for persons with cystic fibrosis and those interested in cystic fibrosis.

This site provides a weekly or biweekly report on the status of the flu virus in Canada. Regularly updated, zoomable maps are provided for easy localization. Statistics for all areas are also provided. Links provided to other Health Canada articles provide a large volume of information on the influenza virus in general, reports on various programs relating to influenza, and immunization information.

FluNet
The World Health Organization maintains this web site. It contains information on current flu conditions in participating countries. Also included is laboratory information on recently isolated strains and the contents of vaccines in the northern and southern hemisphere. Several documents available in HTML and PDF are available containing the Influenza Pandemic Plan and recent news on the global influenza condition.

Gaining and Growing
Gaining and Growing is a site hosted by the University of Washington, and is sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The bronchopulmonary dysplasia page provides nutritional information about infants with the disorder. Much of the information presented is more technical and therefore less suitable to a person with less knowledge of the medical terminology used.

Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)
The Global Initiative for Asthma is a joint, international project of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH, and the World Health Organization (WHO). GINA strives to attain “Increase awareness of asthma and its public health consequences; promote identification of reasons for the increased prevalence of asthma; promote study of the association between asthma and the environment; reduce asthma morbidity and mortality; improve management of asthma; [and] improve availability and accessibility of effective asthma therapy.” The site contains information for asthma patients, healthcare professionals, and policy makers. Very in-depth information is provided on the nature of asthma, management of asthma from a personal level up to a global level, and global contact information for various organizations involved in asthma research and education. Some documents are available only in Adobe Acrobat format.

Risk factors, tobacco reduction, screening, and treatment are also available. While this site does not offer information about cancer, it provides valuable statistical information on cancer from a Canadian perspective.

This site provides a great volume of articles on various aspects of lung cancer. The articles are categorized under the following: incidence, epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis and pathophysiology, overall management, screening and early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, early-stage disease, advanced disease, psychosocial effects, treatment, prevention, and miscellany. Some articles require a grasp of some medical terms, and most require some knowledge about lung cancer, but overall this site is quite readable. The provided articles are predominantly from the journal Oncology, with some articles from other equally reputable sources. This site is an excellent source of detailed, germane, and creditable information.

“The Lung Cancer Information Center is an electronic library of comprehensive educational materials on cancer for healthcare professionals and patients.” This site provides very detailed information on lung cancer for both patients and professionals. Patient information includes a guide to lung cancer, a link to “Ten Questions About Lung Cancer”, a guide for families facing cancer, nonsmall cell lung carcinoma, malignant mesothelioma, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, smoking, environmental tobacco smoke, and clinical trials. Professional information provides similar information with a clinical approach and with a more technical vernacular. Both patient and professional sections contain very detailed information on various aspects of lung cancer and are invaluable sources of information.

The primary concern of the institute is to research treatments and technologies relating to various disorders. The lung information presented includes dealing with asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoking, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), pulmonary hypotension, respiratory failure, and sarcodiosis. Specific information references include general asthma information, diagnosis information and symptoms, clinical trials, research, disease management and prevention, specific aspects of asthma (exercising, minority health, bone health), and available treatments. This is an unparalleled source of information for specific issues as well as general reading on asthma.

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute: Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute is a division of the National Institute of Health of America. This site is an online version of a publication in which they provide a large volume of information on bronchopulmonary dysplasia. National Lung Health Education Program
The NLHEP strives to improve lung health and to prevent lung diseases through public education. The site provides information on lung anatomy, COPD, asthma, diagnoses (especially spirometry), and treatments. Strong emphasis is placed upon smoking cessation and a large amount of material is offered to this end.

The organization of this page can become confusing, however there is a rich volume of dependable information that is provided.

ParentsPlace.com – Croup
This site is provided by ParentsPlace.com, a leader in parenting information including child health information. Their croup page provides causes of croup, symptoms, information on what to do if you child gets croup, and when a parent should seek medical help. While this page provides minimal information about croup, it is a good reference for information once croup has been diagnosed.

PEDBASE – Croup
The PEDiatric DataBASE was designed by Dr. Alan Gandy (MD.,PhD.,FRCP(C)) to provide information on various Pediatric disorders. The croup page provides a definition, epidemiology, the pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, investigations, management, and parents’ instruction for a child with croup. Much of the information provided requires an understanding of technical terms, and therefore is best suited for readers knowledgeable in medical terms, or as added information for those with a grasp on this childhood disorder.

Pertussis
This document is provided by the Center for Disease Control. It is an 18-page document with detailed descriptions of the disease under the following headings: Bordetella pertussis, pathogenesis, clinical features, complications, laboratory diagnosis, medical management, epidemiology, secular trends in the United States, case definition, case classification, pertussis vaccines, vaccine schedule and use, adverse reactions following vaccination, contradictions and precautions to vaccination, vaccine storage and handling, other considerations about the pertussis vaccination controversy, and pertussis surveillance. This is an excellent resource for in-depth information on pertussis. Some technical terminology is included and not defined, so some knowledge of medical vernacular may be required. Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
KidsHealth.org is operated by the Nemours foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of children and the elderly. The pertussis information page contains information on signs and symptoms of pertussis, a description of the disease, duration, incubation, contagiousness, prevention information, and treatment (both at home and professional). In-depth information is not provided on this page, but it makes for an adequate starting point in learning about pertussis.

Pneumococcal Disease

This site is provided by the Canadian Lung Association. Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation
The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization aimed at funding research and education about pulmonary fibrosis. Information provided on their web page relates to donations and organization information, links to journals and web sites with information on pulmonary fibrosis, the latest news of interest to patients with pulmonary fibrosis, the latest in research information, and general information on the disease itself. As an information source, users may find the research information and news sections most valuable.

Quick Stats and Statistics
This site is provided by the Canadian Lung Association. The information provided is a link to a number of statistical sites, both within the Lung Association and from other reputable Canadian sources. Information provided does not include details on how to quit smoking, but it is an excellent reference source for Canadian-based statistics on smoking.

Quitsmokingsupport.com
A website that has been dedicated to the cause of smoking cessation since 1994. This site provides an impressive amount of information on smoking, cigarettes, and quitting. Great detail is provided in areas of smoking too great to list. This site is likely the best source for smoking cessation information on the web. Highly recommended!

Respiratory Disorders – Lung Cancer
This website is provided as a service of the University of Maryland Medical school. Information provided by this site includes a general overview of lung cancer including the different form of it, symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment information. While this site does not provide information in great detail, it is a good starting point or reference point for information on lung cancer.

Respiratory Disorders – Pneumonia

This website is maintained by a pulmonologist specializing in sarcoidosis, Norman T. Soskel, M.D. It houses an impressive volume of information on sarcoidosis as well as a large number of links to external sources. The main site provides some basic information and statistics on sarcoidosis, and the provided articles present information in a more technical, thorough manner. This site is highly recommended for anybody seeking to learn more about sarcoidosis, whether as a starting point or for more detailed information.

Sarcoidosis – NIH – NHLBI
This site is provided by the National Institute of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The sarcoidosis booklet provided by the site includes information under an introduction, usual symptoms, who gets sarcoidosis, what sarcoidosis is not, what we don’t know, about sarcoidosis, course of the disease, management, diagnosis, research status in sarcoidosis, living with sarcoidosis, for more information, and a glossary. The information presented is very reputable and goes into moderate detail in language that is easy to understand.

Severe Croup
This site is provided by Nighttime Pediatrics Clinics, Inc. It provides answers to some frequently asked questions about severe croup, that is, croup that has been diagnosed by a physician and requires a breathing aide. While this site does not provide information about croup, it does provide relevant information regarding the treatment of severe cases of croup.

Smoking Cessation
This site is provided by the Canadian Lung Association. The information provided is tailored to the main concerns characteristic of smoking cessation difficulties. The provided pages include “I’m not ready to quit yet”, “I’m concerned about stress and weight gain”, “I want to quit smoking”, I’m having withdrawal symptoms”, “I want to stay a non-smoker”, “I’m pregnant and I want to quit smoking”, “I’m a friend of a smoker”, “I would like to order some materials”. The information provided is easy to understand but goes into great detail. An excellent source of information on smoking cessation, remaining smoke-free, and helping others try to quit. All information provided includes links to a page on how to order brochures of the specific page.

The American Experience: Influenza 1918
This site is provided by PBS. It is a historical view of the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic in the United States. A transcript of the TV program of the same title is provided as well as additional documentation, maps, a month-by-month timeline of the spread of the flu, and a bibliography for further reading on the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.

The Canadian Lung Association
This is an excellent site featuring lung disease information, quick Canadian facts and statistics, Children’s page (health information such as, “why we have lungs”), drug information, support group information throughout Canada, and specific Respiratory Condition Health Information. Some of the conditions this site addresses include: living with lung disease, asthma, chronic lung disease, tuberculosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, cancer of the lungs, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia and much more.

The Common Cold
This site maintained by Peter J. Casano, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist. It includes a definition, causes, symptoms, diagnoses, recommendations, and finally a list of medical ingredients to look for when searching for medication to control symptoms.

The Lung Association: Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
The Canadian Lung Association provides an overview of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and information on the standard treatment procedures of the disorder. This site does not provide detailed information regarding bronchopulmonary dysplasia, but does provide a good foundation of knowledge to build upon.

The Merck Manual: Pulmonary Embolism
“Merck is a worldwide research-intensive company that discovers and develops, manufactures and markets human and animal health products and services.” The online version of the Merck manual (Home Edition) provides information on medical conditions to the public. The pulmonary embolism section contains a general description of pulmonary embolism, its causes, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment. While not going into great detail on pulmonary embolism, it does provide an adequate volume of information at a non-technical level.

The Ontario Lung Association: Health Information
This site is operated by the Ontario Lung Association, a charity organization that promotes awareness of the importance of lung health, and provides both patient support and information about the lungs and lung disorders. The Lung Health site offers information about asthma, the common cold, influenza, pneumonia, tuberculosis, emphysema, and lung cancer. There are several sections dealing with smoking and its effects on lung health. There is also a section of community services offered through the Ontario Lung Association.

The Prevention and Management of Asthma in Canada
This site is an Adobe Acrobat file of a report from the National Asthma Control Task Force. It is a broad study and set of proposals centering on the effect of asthma on Canada at the personal, social, and economic levels. The study includes a large volume of statistical data and information on the diagnosis, causes, symptoms, prevention and screening of asthma. Most of the information provided focuses on asthma’s effect on Canadian society rather than control and prevention of asthma.

The World Sarcoidosis Society
Previously known as the Canadian Sarcoidosis Society, this group and site provides a place for exchange of personal stories for sufferers of sarcoidosis and their families. A brief section is compiled describing the disease, but the dominant theme of the site is one of patient support. Many personal stories are provided both for support and for information purposes. Also provided is a page of recent news relating to sarcoidosis. Contact information to volunteers is provided; volunteers can give (non-professional) advice to other affected by sarcoidosis, as well, the Cyber Pals section allows people to find others to contact for support and to exchange information. If looking for medical information, this link would not be recommended, however it is an excellent support society with worldwide presence.

Tuberculosis
This is the tuberculosis section of the Canadian Lung Association’s web site. This site provides the basic biology of tuberculosis, Canadians’ role in the history of the disease, information on drug treatment and prescription information, and links to international groups dedicated to studying the disease. However, what makes this page unique is its voluminous (251-page) PDF document “Canadian Tuberculosis Standards” which is an annually updated book on various aspects of tuberculosis (Adobe Acrobat Reader required to view document). For specific information about tuberculosis, from the basics through to detailed, this site is a necessary stop.

Tuberculosis.net
“Tuberculosis.net strives to provide information about tuberculosis to the public and healthcare community.” Information provided on tuberculosis.net includes a general FAQ on tuberculosis for general information, and in the health care provider section, a number of teaching aids and images for more detailed information. There is also offered a moderated public forum for the exchange of ideas between people on tuberculosis.

ViaHealth Respiratory Disorders: COPD
ViaHealth, a Rochester, New York based medical center, provides information on COPD through its categorized components: asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary emphysema. For each, information provided consists of a definition of the disease, symptoms, causes, diagnostic information, and treatment. The information provided is not in great detail, but this is an excellent site for reference on COPD.

What You Should Know About Pneumonia – From the Canadian Lung Association
This site is provided by the Canadian Lung Association. Information provided is divided into four sections based on the different types of pneumonia. Each section contains an overview of the disease, the symptoms, causes, prevention, and treatment. The information provided is in-depth and presented in lay language.

You Can Quit Smoking
This booklet is provided by the US Department of Health and Human Services. It includes a large amount of credible information on how to quit smoking. The information provided includes reasons for quitting smoking, steps to take in order to quit, some available medications for smoking cessation, and information on relapse. An excellent overview and simple outline on smoking cessation.

YourHealth Library – Croup
The Audio Health Library contains medical information both in text and RealAudio format. This page provides diagnostic and care information for parents with a child suffering from croup. The information is provided in the HTML text can also be presented, identically, with RealAudio.
