The ceinture fléchée, or sash, was an important part of the 18th and 19th century French-Canadian costume, as well as a trade good favoured by native people. It helped to retain body heat, and served as a belt to hold tools around the waist.

This object was brought to the Detroit region by Pierre Descomptes, dit Labadie, one of the first to receive a land concession on the Windsor side of the river in 1749.

It is possible that this carving was the tabernacle door of the 1787 Assumption Church which was replaced by the present Assumption Church in 1846.
